4 Mental Health’s Connecting with People mental health training programmes are designed to offer a whole organisational approach to improve the response shown to people in distress. Our programmes reflect th elatest evidence-based principles and best practice. Our training is extensively peer-reviewed by international experts in self-harm and suicide prevention, people with lived experience, practitioners and third sector (NGO) experts.

Develops understanding and compassion
Tackles myths, stigma and barriers

Suitable for ALL i.e. community members with no previous training
Helps delegates understand how distress develops and how people can be best supported

Facilitates a safe assessment, triage, immediate response for busy clinicians such as first point of access in Mental Health services, GPs/Primary Care staff/A&E (ED) staff in pressured environments

Section 1: Suicide Awareness for Primary Care - Suitable for all primary care practice staff

Promotes a role for ALL in suicide prevention
Suitable for professionals and community members
Develops understanding & compassion
Introduces concept that suicide is not inevitable – ambivalence and interruption
Develops common language between community, services and those in distress

Section 2: Suicide Response for Primary Care - Provides primary care clinicians with training on how

to use SAFETool™

Safe assessment, triage, immediate safe response suitable for a busy GP with a time pressured clinical environment

Definition of compassion and the 6 attributes of compassion
Increases understanding of the key components of compassion, the barriers and how to maintain a compassionate approach at work
Basic neuroscience of compassion and the science that supports the physical and emotional benefits of a compassionate approach
Introduction the impact of early years, genetic, occupational and environmental factors
Self-compassion and positive outcomes including compassion to others
Introduction to the 3 emotional systems
Impact of organisational culture on compassion
Each participant will develop a plan to sustain a compassionate approach at work

Explore the myths and stigma associated with self-harm
Understand the range of coping mechanisms when facing challenging life events
Understand the prevalence of self-harm
Be aware of research on self-harm including the link to suicide
Understand reasons why people self-harm
Learn about the biological and psychological effects of self-harm on an individual
Compassionate ways to support someone who uses self-harm as a coping mechanism
Supporting people to find safer ways to deal with distress to support recovery from self-harm
Be aware of resources available to support someone who self-harms

Content is common with the Community Suicide Awareness module above, however the delivery is

tailored towards healthcare professionals

Develops a collaborative and transparent approach to mitigating suicide risk
Promotes a collaborative and compassionate person-centred assessment of someone at risk of suicide – rather than a ‘tick box’ exercise
At the end of the module participants will be able to create a comprehensive, person-centred bio-psychosocial suicide mitigation plan
Practical ways to instil authentic hope in a busy clinical environment and how to increase your patient’s resilience to suicidal thoughts
Understand the value and importance of social support mapping
Collaboratively engage in a comprehensive social support mapping exercise and be able to coproduce a Social Support Map
Facilitates a collaborative and transparent approach

Suitable for the general public, including children over the age of 13, health and social care practitioners and professionals
Enhances delegates’ emotional literacy
Challenges stigma around emotional distress and tackles barriers to help-seeking
Uses ‘watercourse analogy’ to help delegates understand different levels of distress
Shares effective self-help strategies suitable for different levels of distress
Uses the ‘sunflower analogy’ to help delegates understand wellbeing and resilience
Shares practical ways to develop and maintain emotional wellbeing and promotes the importance of this
Equips delegates to have a greater emotional literacy and know how to enhance their resilience (not mental toughness)
Equips delegates with positive ways to cope with stress or emotional distress, to develop a personal plan to build their wellbeing and know where to access further support if they ever need help in the future
Equips the delegate with the knowledge of how to use StayingSafe.net to make their own Safety Plan

Practice and know-how to co-produce an immediate and long-term Safety Plan

Direct-to-Participant (DtP)

Direct-to-Participant (DtP) training is delivered by Connecting with People Trainers directly to client staff.

Number of delegates per session: 30 max* (custom events for higher or lower numbers can be arranged)
Delivery Time: 2.5 – 3 hours per module
Available for all modules

Train-the-trainer (TTT)

‘In-house’ trainers are accredited via a Connecting with People Train-the-Trainer (TTT) programme. These TTT trainers can then onward deliver unlimited in-house DtP sessions to their colleagues as long as they remain accredited and are covered under a current Annual TTT License

Number of delegates to become trainers: 8 max* per cohort
Training Time: 2-5 days depending upon how many modules are selected (example: 2 modules would be 3 days)
Available for all modules

Annual TTT License:

All trainers accredited via the Connecting with People Train-the-Trainer (TTT) programme must covered under a current TTT License for which an annual fee is charged.

Webinar Direct-to-Participant training (wDtP)

A training programme designed for delivery to smaller groups:

Open to smaller groups of 10 to 20 delegates, all trainers/delegates remotely located
This delivery format will follow the same learning and experiential journey as a face-to-face deliver
Robust safety protocols in place to ensure delegate wellbeing throughout the training delivery
Delivery Time: Approx. 3 hours per module
Available for all modules

Webinar Training Conference (wTC)

A training programme designed for larger groups and are delivered in a lecture format:

For up to 70 delegates, all trainers/delegates remotely located
Lecture style presentation with set breaks and intervals in order to facilitate Q&A’s and to maintain the interactive experience of our training
Robust safety protocols in place to ensure delegate wellbeing throughout the training delivery
Delivery Time: Approx. 2.5 hours per module
Available for the following modules only: Emotional Resilience , Suicide Awareness , Suicide Response Part 1

Webinar Train-the-Trainer (wTTT)

Trainers are accredited via a Connecting with People Train-the-Trainer (wTTT) programme. These TTT trainers can then onward deliver unlimited in-house standard face-to-face DtP sessions to their colleagues as long as they remain accredited and are covered under a valid Annual TTT License.

Open to a maximum of 6 delegates
Delivery format will follow the same learning and experiential journey as a face-to-face TTT delivery
Robust safety protocols in place to ensure delegate wellbeing throughout the training delivery
Pre-training webinar platform videos must be viewed prior to programme commencement (2 hours max)
For modules that include SAFETool™ a post-training online module must be successfully completed for the delegate to awarded trainer accreditation (1-hour max)
Available for all modules

IMPORTANT NOTE for TTT Delegates – Onward delivery via wDtP

We appreciate that the IT skills of attending wTTT and TTT delegates may vary considerably. Therefore, to ensure our quality standard is maintained across all delivery formats, those TTT delegates wishing to onward deliver training via wDtP sessions must also attend an additional ½ day webinar delivery training session, Webinar wDtP Training Delivery Module.
